What to Do When One Concept Just Won't Click

When a concept won't click, the fix is almost never to read the same explanation again, only slower. Being stuck usually means one of four specific things: you're missing a prerequisite the explanation assumes you have, the notation is what's blocking you, an ordinary word is being used in a narrow technical sense, or you've only ever seen the general statement and never one worked case with real values in it. Each of those has its own way out, and none of them is another pass over the same paragraph. The first move is figuring out which kind of stuck you're in.

Why rereading feels like progress when it isn't

Going over the same paragraph a third time feels productive because the text gets more familiar each pass. Familiarity with the wording isn't understanding of the idea, though, which is why you can hit the same wall three times in a row and still believe you're closing in on it. If a second pass moved nothing, a third one usually won't either. That's the signal to switch tactics rather than switch to a slower gear.

The four kinds of stuck

  • Missing prerequisite. The explanation leans on something you never learned, or learned once and lost. The sentence parses fine, but one step inside it has no ground under it.
  • Notation. You get the idea in plain words, and the symbols, syntax, or diagram convention are what's in the way. Nothing is wrong with your understanding yet, because it hasn't survived contact with the formal version.
  • Vocabulary collision. A word you know casually is being used in a narrow technical sense (work, power, significant, class, argument), and your everyday meaning keeps overwriting the real one every time you read the sentence.
  • No concrete case. You've seen the general rule stated four different ways and never once watched it run on actual numbers or actual input.

Naming which one you're in takes about thirty seconds and saves the twenty minutes you'd otherwise spend applying the wrong fix. A prerequisite gap doesn't get better from a clearer explanation of the same step. A notation problem doesn't get better from going further back in the material.

Back up one level

If the stuck is a prerequisite gap, the material in front of you isn't where the problem lives. Find the one term or step in the explanation that you'd have trouble defining if someone asked, go learn that, and come back. This feels like losing ground, which is why people resist it and keep grinding at the paragraph that isn't the actual problem. Backing up one level for ten minutes routinely dissolves something that ninety minutes of rereading wouldn't have.

Get a second explanation, not a second reading

A different explanation is not the same as the same explanation again. What you want is a different representation: if the first version was prose, look for a diagram or a worked example; if it was a formula, look for someone describing it in words; if it was abstract, look for the version with a physical analogy attached. Pairing a verbal explanation with a visual one gives you two routes into the same idea instead of one, which is the whole point of dual coding. Often the second version doesn't teach you anything new, it just happens to name the one thing the first version left implicit.

Run one example by hand, all the way through

For a notation problem or a missing concrete case, nothing beats doing one instance yourself with real values, start to finish, without skipping the boring middle. Pick the smallest possible example: two data points instead of a table, a three-line function instead of a module, one sentence instead of a paragraph of text to parse. Write each step down rather than tracking it in your head. The step where you stall is the concept, and now you know exactly which one it is.

Say it out loud and listen for where you stop

Close the material and explain the idea out loud in two sentences. Not a summary you can look at, the version you can produce cold. The place where your sentence trails off is the gap, and it's usually much narrower than the vague sense of 'I don't get this' you had a minute earlier. Most of the time you understand four of the five pieces and one specific connection is missing.

Time-box it, then leave it alone

Stuck has a ceiling. Past roughly twenty minutes on one concept, more time in the chair stops buying you much, and frustration starts making everything else in the session worse too. Mark the exact sentence you stopped at, move to the next part of the material, and come back to it in the next session. A gap you slept on is often noticeably easier the second morning, and there's no version of studying where you have to solve everything the same day you first met it.

The routine, in order

  1. Stop rereading after the second pass. A third one is not a plan.
  2. Name which of the four kinds of stuck you're in, in writing.
  3. If it's a prerequisite, go fix that first and come back to this sentence afterward.
  4. Find one explanation in a different form: a diagram, a worked example, code, an analogy.
  5. Do one small concrete instance yourself with real values, writing each step down.
  6. Explain the idea out loud in two sentences and note where you trail off.
  7. Give the whole thing twenty minutes, then move on and return next session.

Pick out every term and step in the explanation and try to define each one in a sentence. If any of them comes back blank or fuzzy, that's a prerequisite gap, and no amount of extra effort on the current page will close it.
Is it bad to move on while I'm still confused?
No, as long as you mark the exact place you stopped and come back to it in a later session. Later material sometimes explains the earlier part for you, and a night's sleep genuinely helps. What doesn't work is moving on and never marking it.
