Retrieval practice means testing yourself on material instead of reviewing it: closing the notes and trying to pull the answer out of memory before you check it. It builds a stronger memory than rereading or highlighting, because the act of retrieving something strengthens it, while looking at the material again mostly just feels familiar without doing much.
What actually counts as retrieval practice
Not every quiz counts. The part that matters is attempting recall before you look, not checking your answer while you read along. Closing a chapter and writing down everything you remember, answering a flashcard before flipping it, explaining a concept out loud with no notes in front of you, working a practice problem cold before checking the method: all of these force you to reconstruct the answer rather than recognize it on the page.
Rereading and highlighting don't do this. Both make the material feel more familiar, and familiarity gets mistaken for understanding constantly. You can read a paragraph three times and feel like you know it, then fail to produce a single sentence of it from memory five minutes later.
Why pulling beats putting back

The most common way retrieval practice quietly turns back into rereading is peeking too early: glancing at the first few words of the answer the moment recall starts to take effort, then telling yourself you basically knew it anyway. That peek collapses the whole exercise back into recognition. The fix isn't complicated, just uncomfortable: commit to a full attempt, even a wrong one, before you look, and write or say the attempt somewhere instead of only thinking it. An attempt that exists outside your head is much harder to quietly skip.
Why it feels worse while it's working
Retrieval practice is slower and more uncomfortable than review, and that discomfort gets mistaken for a sign that the method isn't working.
