Pretesting means answering a question before anyone has taught you the material, guessing on purpose even when you expect to get it wrong. It sounds backward: you'd think staring at a question you can't answer just wastes time or plants the wrong idea in your head. But the guess itself is what does the work. Trying to answer forces you to search your memory and decide what an answer would even look like, and that search is what makes the correct answer, once you see it, stick. It's a small change to make to a study session, and it costs you a minute or two before you were going to start reading anyway.
What pretesting actually looks like
In practice it's simple enough to do without any special setup. Before you open a new chapter, section, or video, look only at the heading or the question the material is about to answer, and write down your best guess first. Not a summary of what you already know, a guess at what's coming. If a chapter is titled 'How Enzymes Speed Up Reactions,' you write a sentence or two guessing how that might work before reading a single paragraph of the actual explanation. You'll usually be wrong, sometimes completely wrong, and that's fine. The guess isn't the deliverable. The attempt is.
Why a wrong guess still helps
Reading a fact cold and guessing at it first feel similar from the outside, but they aren't the same activity. Guessing first means searching through what you already know and noticing where the gaps are, which sharpens your attention on exactly the part you got wrong once the real answer arrives. Reading without guessing skips that search step entirely, so nothing marks which detail actually mattered; every sentence gets roughly equal, low attention. This sits in the same family as retrieval practice: producing an answer, even a wrong one, engages memory differently than recognizing an answer someone hands you. A guess leaves a kind of open question hanging over the material, and the real answer resolves that question instead of arriving as one more fact among dozens. How to build it into a study session
- Before opening the chapter, section, or video, read only the heading or title, nothing else.
- Write one or two sentences guessing what the material will cover or how it works, even with low confidence.
- If the section ends with review questions, answer two or three of them before you start, not after.
- Go through the actual material and mark, in the moment, where your guess was close and where it missed.
- Write the correction next to your original guess instead of only noting in your head that you were wrong.
Where pretesting works, and where it doesn't
Pretesting is strongest on material with a definite right answer: a formula, a vocabulary word, a historical date, the next step in a process, the result of an experiment. Anything you can genuinely be right or wrong about gives your guess something solid to be checked against. It works less well on material that's a matter of interpretation, like what a poem means or what an author is really arguing, since there's no single correct answer for a wrong guess to be corrected against. For that kind of reading, a better warmup is writing down what you expect the argument to be and comparing it afterward to what the author actually says, a cousin of pretesting but not quite the same move.
