Elaborative interrogation is a specific study move: when you hit a fact, pause and ask yourself why it's true, then answer using what you already know. It sounds almost too simple to matter, but it's one of the more reliable techniques in learning research for making an isolated fact stick instead of sliding out of memory within a day or two.

What it actually looks like

Say you're studying biology and you read that plants exposed to more red light grow taller stems. Reading that once and moving on treats it as a floating fact: true, but connected to nothing. Elaborative interrogation means stopping to ask why that would be true, then working out an answer: red light signals shade from nearby plants, so the plant stretches upward to compete for light. Whether that reasoning is fully correct matters less than the process of building it. Even a half-right explanation forces you to search your existing knowledge for something to attach the new fact to.

Why a reason you generate beats one you read

A fact you were handed and a fact you worked out share the same content but not the same footing in memory. Working out a reason threads the new information through knowledge you already have, and each connection becomes another path back to it later. A fact with no connections has exactly one way back to it: recalling the fact itself, word for word. A fact wired into three things you already understand has three ways back.

This is different from testing yourself on the fact afterward, which is retrieval practice, or spacing your review of it over several days, which is spaced repetition. Both matter too, but they work on a fact that's already been encoded. Elaborative interrogation happens earlier, at the moment you first meet the fact, and it changes how that encoding happens in the first place.

How to actually do it

  • When you hit a claim, stop and ask “why is this true” before moving to the next sentence.
  • Answer out loud or in writing, not just in your head. A vague mental gesture at an explanation doesn't count; a sentence you could read back does.
  • If you can't come up with a reason, treat that as useful information. It usually means you're missing background the fact depends on, worth checking before you move on.
  • Push past the first answer when you can. “Because that's the rule” restates the fact; it isn't an explanation.

A second example, in a completely different subject

The same move works outside the sciences. Say you're studying for a history exam and you read that a medieval town built its market square next to the church rather than the castle. Instead of just filing that away, ask why: the church was where people already gathered on a regular schedule, so putting the market there meant built-in foot traffic without anyone having to coordinate it. You might be wrong about the exact reason a historian would give, and that's fine. The point isn't to guess the textbook's phrasing on the first try. It's that you now have a plausible cause-and-effect story attached to the fact, and a wrong guess you check against the real explanation later tends to correct itself and stay corrected, in a way that a fact you never questioned rarely does.

Where it works, and where it doesn't

Elaborative interrogation needs something to connect to, so it works best on material that relates to knowledge you already have: a new date in a period of history you've studied before, a chemistry rule that follows from atomic structure you already know, a grammar pattern in a language that shares roots with one you speak. On material with zero prior context, like the very first words of a language you've never touched, there's nothing yet to hook a “why” onto, and plain repetition or association does more of the early work.

It also doesn't replace testing yourself later. Explaining why a fact is true when you first meet it helps you encode it well. Whether you can still produce it a week from now is a separate question, and that's what retrieval practice and spaced review are for.
