Two separate systems, working together
The psychologist Allan Paivio proposed in the 1970s that the mind processes language and images through two distinct systems. The verbal system handles words in sequence, one after another, the way you'd read a sentence or hear it spoken. The visual system handles images all at once, as a spatial layout you take in together rather than in order. The two systems are separate, but they're wired to each other, so information stored in both leaves more ways back to it than information stored in only one.
Why the pairing beats either channel alone
The advantage isn't that pictures are inherently more memorable than words. It's redundancy in the useful sense: two related traces instead of one give you two possible starting points when you try to recall the material later. Forget the exact wording of how a pulley reduces force, and the image of the rope looping through the wheel can still bring the mechanism back. Forget which part of the diagram matters, and the sentence you read can point you back to it. Either code can cue the other, which is exactly what a single verbal explanation can't offer on its own.
Where dual coding goes wrong
Adding any image to a page of text isn't dual coding. A stock photo next to a paragraph about negotiation tactics, chosen because it shows two people shaking hands, adds nothing: it doesn't represent the actual content, so there's no visual trace worth forming. The same goes the other direction. A caption that just repeats the diagram's own labels word for word doesn't add a second code either, it's the same information typed out twice, which adds reading time without adding a retrieval path. The visual has to represent the structure of the idea, a process, a relationship, a sequence, not decorate the page next to it.
A concrete example: studying the heart
Say you're learning how blood moves through the heart. A written explanation alone gives you a sequence of clauses to hold onto: right atrium, tricuspid valve, right ventricle, pulmonary valve, lungs, left atrium, and so on. That's a long verbal chain, and losing your place partway through means starting over. A labeled diagram of the heart's chambers, followed the same way, gives you a second, spatial version of the identical sequence, one where each step has a location relative to the others instead of just a position in a sentence. Study the text and the diagram together, and you can recover a step you've forgotten two different ways: by continuing the sentence in your head, or by tracing the path on the shape you remember.
How to use it when you're studying
- When you read an explanation of a process, sketch it before moving on, even roughly. The act of building the visual matters more than how polished it looks.
- When you're given a diagram, label the parts in your own words instead of copying the original captions. Copying skips the step where your verbal system actually processes the content.
- Don't force a visual onto material that has no real structure to show. A definition or a fact doesn't need a diagram; a process, a comparison, or a sequence usually does.
- Test the pairing, don't just make it. Cover the diagram and explain the idea in words, or cover the text and reconstruct the diagram from memory, then check which direction is weaker.
